Svetlana is from Latvia where people say that all Latvian girls are born
with needles in their hands and knitting. She has crocheted and knitted
since she can remember. At university, Svetlana received a degree in architecture
and then completed a course at the Academy of Arts. That experience in colors,
shades and shaping has been very helpful in her crochet and knit designing.
She prefers to design her own sweaters or decorate ready-made garments with
crochet to make them unique. Svetlana moved to Canada with her family in
1994 and has been employed with Coats Patons since 1996. Her crochet and
knit designs appear in many of the Patons patterns books. AS301A Glamour at Christmas (3 hours, SAT AM) |

family roots in Louisiana, who grew up in the Southwest U.S. and has traveled
to Europe and Asia. She has authored three books, the most recent Beadwrangler's
Hands on Crochet with Beads & Fiber, and will publish two more in 1999.
Lapidary Journal published photographs of her beaded sculpture "Pinellas

Fiberarts are Jule's passion. She learned to crochet, knit and sew in elementary
school. Soon after learning the basics, she began her design career (sometimes
by accident or when actually attempting to follow a pattern). She has taught
all levels of crochet, knit and art classes since 1972, currently developing
a program to teach crocheting and knitting to children where they learn
the fundamentals as they create their own designs. Jule has a degree in
Textile Design from the University of Washington and has exhibited her crochet
and artwork both locally and nationally. Her teaching enthusiasm and inspirational
examples encourage all students to develop their creativity and crochet
passions. CJ102AP Finish with Finesse (6 hours, FRI AM & PM) CJ601P Hats & Caps in Colors Galore (3 hours, SUN PM) |

Named a "Master Knitter of the 90's" by Vogue Knitting, this New
York City native has been involved in some aspect of the fashion industry
since age
13. Lily designs for magazines and yarn companies and does fabric
development and knitdowns for Seventh Avenue, from the Gap to Isaac Mizrahi.
She writes the "On Designing" column for Knitter's and the annual
"Focus on Fibers" report for Knit 'N Style. Her workshops, lectures,
and seminars on hand and machine knitting and crochet are conducted throughout
the U.S. and Canada. In early '94, Lily served as international fashion
and design consultant to the Indonesian Textile Association in Bali and
Malaysian manufacturing concerns in Kuala Lumpur. She designs many things
under the Vanna White name, including afghans for both those books. In late
1999, Lily's first book on colorful crocheted afghans will be released by
Oxmoor House. Being a token "young person who knits and crochets,"
she has been featured and cited in several newspaper articles, including
in the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, Newsday, the Chicago
Tribune, and the New York Daily News for bashing the "granny"
image of handcrafts. She's been seen on cable TV's "Handmade by Design"
on Lifetime and on CNN. CL302AP Bias Crochet Without Prejudice (6 hours, SAT AM & PM) CL502AP Aran Crochet (6 hours, SUN AM & PM) |

A.T. Grant, Ph.D., owns Incite Brain Works, Inc., parent corporation of
Athena Temptations, a full-service crochet company. Production capabilities
are in Jamaica where A.T. designs, teaches and supervises the cottage industry.
Educational vacation opportunities are offered: crochet in thatched-roof
shade by the beach, learning, relaxing, sharing stories and techniques with
others who love the hook, while the children play happily in the warm waters.
Jamaica. No problem. A.T. combined her '70s feminist Plexiglas artwork with
her childhood love of thread crochet when she invented the "hooked-on"
technique in 1983. Her book proposal, Hook Couture, is looking for a publisher.
As a Diploma in Crochet student, A.T. won the 1997 Barbara-Ann Trophy for
her Silver Bead Wesekh. Her thesis topic is "Caribbean Crochet." GA401P Crochet Jamaica (3 hours, SAT PM) |

for yarn companies and magazines such as Knitter's, Interweave Knits, Fashion

An Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology,
Arnetta has been teaching upper division and seminar classes in knit design,
hand knitting and crochet since 1988. Arnetta began crocheting at a very
early age inspired by a mother who crocheted afghans for all in the family
and a sister who crocheted flower arrangements for hospital patients. While
working in the knitwear industry, Arnetta found her knowledge of crochet
very useful for finishing, especially slip stitching seams and neckline
trims.

Bonnie was "born with a crochet hook in one hand and a purple crayon
in the other." In the '60s and early '70s, she went to art school where
she rediscovered crochet and incorporated it into her large scale textiles.
Bonnie's thesis was a combinatio
n of woven and crocheted figures. Some of
these large crocheted figures were included in the crochet books from the
'70s. For the past 25 years, Bonnie has used wire and recycled materials
instead of yarn for wall sculptures and jewelry. She also uses a computer
to design much of her work. Bonnie is an artist, craftsman, computer user,
and recycler. Her final products are mixed media, but crochet remains the
tie that binds it all together. Her work has been exhibited in museums and
galleries all over the country. She has presented at the Surface Design
Conference and Convergence, the Handweavers Guild of America conference,
about how artists make use of computers for design and business applications. MB504AP Anything But Yarn: Crocheting Sculpture with Wire & Other Recycled Stuff (6 hours, SUN AM & PM) |

Mary started crocheting in 1967 because she really needed more doll clothes.
She crocheted her first full-sized sweater in 1969 and won a ribbon in duPont's
"Golden Afghan" contest in 1973. Two of her designs won prizes
in a series of six contests sponsored by McCall's Needlework & Crafts
in 1982. Her articles on crocheting fabrics that drape well and on design
from the top down were published in Threads magazine in 1987 and 1988. Her
approach focuses on simple practicality and the elegance of crochet techniques.
Since 1987 she has worked locally mending heirlooms and teaching. Mary contributes
regularly to Warm Up America!, Caps for Kids, and the Layette Project. Mary
also contributes to the Tips & Tricks column for CGOA's Chain newsletter. RM506A Just One Pattern Stitch(3 hours, SUN AM) |

Unexpectedly finding herself having to tea
ch crochet, Pauline discovered
a lack of information on crochet and was surprised to realize that the craft
of crochet (using a single hooked implement, not fingers) is actually quite
young. Pauline enjoys the versatility and variety of materials and equipment

With 20 years teaching experience specializing in crochet, Pauline is a
veritable "walking encyclopaedia" of crochet and has written many
books and articles, as well as being interviewed in newspapers, and on radio
and television. Pauline was an invited guest to the 10th anniversary of
