Svetlana Avrakh, Toronto, Ontario, CANADA

SvetlanaEnlarge Photo Svetlana is from Latvia where people say that all Latvian girls are born with needles in their hands and knitting. She has crocheted and knitted since she can remember. At university, Svetlana received a degree in architecture and then completed a course at the Academy of Arts. That experience in colors, shades and shaping has been very helpful in her crochet and knit designing. She prefers to design her own sweaters or decorate ready-made garments with crochet to make them unique. Svetlana moved to Canada with her family in 1994 and has been employed with Coats Patons since 1996. Her crochet and knit designs appear in many of the Patons patterns books.

Jamaica. No problem. A.T. combined her '70s feminist Plexiglas artwork with her childhood love of thread crochet when she invented the "hooked-on" technique in 1983. Her book proposal, Hook Couture, is looking for a publisher. As a Diploma in Crochet student, A.T. won the 1997 Barbara-Ann Trophy for her Silver Bead Wesekh. Her thesis topic is "Caribbean Crochet."

Bonnie Enlarge Photo Bonnie was "born with a crochet hook in one hand and a purple crayon in the other." In the '60s and early '70s, she went to art school where she rediscovered crochet and incorporated it into her large scale textiles. Bonnie's thesis was a combinatio n of woven and crocheted figures. Some of these large crocheted figures were included in the crochet books from the '70s. For the past 25 years, Bonnie has used wire and recycled materials instead of yarn for wall sculptures and jewelry. She also uses a computer to design much of her work. Bonnie is an artist, craftsman, computer user, and recycler. Her final products are mixed media, but crochet remains the tie that binds it all together. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries all over the country. She has presented at the Surface Design Conference and Convergence, the Handweavers Guild of America conference, about how artists make use of computers for design and business applications.
