The technique used is similar to mosaic crochet where you work a stitch a few rows down but in the front loop only. You'll like it because it doesn't add a lot of bulk to the fabric but still gives a great mosaic effect. You could even turn it inside out for a plain striped crochet beanie. It's almost 2 hats in one!
